Through out the end of the book of Joshua, many of the tribes of Israel refuse to take the last couple steps to actually move into the promised land. Joshua tries to motivate them, breaking things down into little baby steps for them, and reminding them that God is with them.
After decades of longing for their promised land, they are so close they can taste it, yet, they just can’t get it together.
I wonder if it’s because they are having to leave the other tribes and establish their own leadership. Perhaps it is because when you dream of something for so long, when you get so close to actually having it, it’s pretty scary.
The thing that is on my mind this morning is a realization. We are often so much like them. We get so close to success. We’re almost exactly where God wants us. And then…
We chicken out. We back away. We lose faith and courage.
It’s a common thing for my students to make it 9/10’s of the way through the school year, and then, just give up. One of the things I say to them, in these cases, is, “Wouldn’t it have been smarter to figure this out 8 months ago? What’s the point of doing all this work, getting so very close, and then giving up?”
But the truth is that we do all this all the time. And apparently, this human foolishness is nothing new.
What about you: What are some promised lands that God is calling you out to, that you’re so close to, and somehow, you’re backing away and hesitating from taking those last few steps?
